I got my JBL LSR25P monitors pretty cheap; and they worked well for a couple of years. But in September of 2005 I had to send them to JBL for repair. Fortunately they were covered under warranty. But then in March, the amplifier and tweeter blew out of the right channel again. I was amazed at this as my studio is very small and I scarcely play them above a loud speaking voice. Unfortunately this time they were out of warranty, and it would have cost as much to fix it as to buy a new one! So I have reluctantly retired them and am back to my little Cambridge SoundWorks speakers that have served me well for many years. So will I ever buy JBL Professional again? Not a chance.
Fortunately there are dozens of monitors in that range to choose from and I'm sure I'll find a pair that will satisfy me.
You know, I was thinking about this today. I can compose using these little
Cambridge SoundWorks speakers and listen to them for hours on end without the slightest listening fatigue. It's too bad they don't go just a touch louder...but for 90% of my routine work they're just perfect.
Meanwhile I had to get me some decent headphones! After a lot of shopping, and a six-week delay while B&H Photo and Video took back a model they shipped me erroneously, and reading a lot of reviews (see goodcans.com and headphones.org) I settled on a pair of Sennheiser HD580s. These were only about US$180 from an ebay seller. They are open-backed which I was afraid would cause too much noise late at night but that doesn't seem to be a problem. I wouldn't recommend them for musician's monitors if you're recording vocals or a quiet instrument because of the leakage but they are comfortable and super accurate for the work I'm doing...
